Senior guard
Aiden Cherikos scored 28 points to lead the Legion Collegiate Academy varsity boys to a 65-63 victory over crosstown rival York Preparatory Academy in the Lancers' home opener on Tuesday night. The victory was the first of the young season for LCA as it improve to 1-3.
LCA appeared to have the game in hand with three minutes left as it led 58-51, but a late flurry by YPA which was helped by missed shots, turnovers and fouls against Legion helped the Patriots knot the score at 63-63 with two free throws and 13 ticks remaining on the clock. Legion took the ball inbounds and quickly moved to front court before head coach
Ricardo Priester called for a timeout with five seconds left. He designed a sideline out of bounds play that brought the ball into
Isaiah Worley who quickly found Cherikos cutting to the basket for the game-winning layup.
Joining Cherikos in double figures was
Zion Brown and
Amir El who made the winning basket with three seconds remaining, each with 10 points. Cherikos connected on 10 field goals, including four from beyond the 3-point line and added four free throws for his 28 points.
