Lancers Volleyball Opens With Strong Performance

Mia Scott Selected as LCA Athlete of the Week

Rock Hill, SC – The Legion Collegiate Academy varsity and junior varsity volleyball teams opened the 2023 season over the weekend at the South Carolina Coaches Association North/South Tournament at the Rock Hill Sports & Events Center.
 
Both the varsity and junior varsity teams competed in the tournament with the varsity squad posting a 3-1 record while the JV finished 5-1 to finish second in that division.
 
The Lancers got a chance to prepare for the tournament by hosting Victory Christian Center on Thursday night at the LCA Gym, as the Legion Junior Varsity team took on the Kings' varsity squad. The Lancers cruised to a 3-0 victory in that matchup, setting the stage for their weekend performance.

"The team played well this weekend but there is still a list of aspects of the game we need to improve on," head coach Humberto Guevara said. "We were able to score some points and I am proud of the girls' fight against Cardinal Newman on Saturday. I am looking forward to the rest of the season and getting one percent better every day."
 
Mia Scott 8-21-23Legion's varsity opened play in the event on Friday, downing Indian Land High 2-0 with convincing set scores of 25-13 and 25-15. Junior Addison Burke led the Lancers with six kills in the match on nine attacks. Juniors Mia Clyburn and Bryanna Young, along with senior Ariel Gallman, had four kills each. Burke and Anya Pershin had five digs each while Mia Scott finished with 16 assists.
 
The Lancers continued to play well in a 2-0 victory over Mountain Island Charter School from Mt. Holly, NC, in their second match on Saturday. Burke once again led the way with nine kills, on just 12 attacks, as Legion won 25-19 and 25-20. Young (5) and Pershin (4) combined for nine service aces in the match while Scott once again set up her teammates with 17 assists.
 
Legion began play on Saturday against Aiken High, dispatching the Hornets 2-0 by set scores of 25-14 and 25-12. Burke had six of the teams' 19 kills while Clyburn and Kennedy Rouse had four each. Scott had four service aces to go with 14 assists while Rouse had three aces.
 
The Lancers saw their win streak come to an end on Saturday afternoon in a 2-0 loss to Cardinal Newman. The Cardinals took a hard-fought match by scores of 25-18 and 25-21. Rouse led Legion with six kills in the match while Young finished with five. Burke continued to play well, posting 12 digs, while Scott posted 16 assists.

"The girls played well and scored some points," Guevara said. "We lost focus in the third set but were able to bring it back together to finish the match in four sets. Our defense continues to play well and our setter-hitter connections continue to improve."
 
For her performance in the tournament, Scott was selected as the Legion Collegiate Academy Athlete of the Week. During the tournament she had seven service aces, two kills, two blocks, 17 digs and a whopping 63 assists as the Lancers finished fifth in the North/South Tournament.
 
After posting the victory over Victory Christian, the Lancers' junior varsity squad rolled right into the tournament on Friday, posting victories over Myers Park (2-1) and Northwestern (2-0) on the first day of the tournament.
 
The Legion JV squad continued to roll on Saturday, posting straight set wins over Nations Ford and Ardrey Kell before taking a 2-1 victory over Bishop England to advance to the championship match of the tournament. The Lancers battled Weddington in that match, falling 2-0.
 
The Legion Varsity volleyball team is scheduled to return to action on Tuesday, hosting Providence Day School at the LCA Gym at 6 p.m. The Junior Varsity squad will also play the Chargers, with that match scheduled for a 5 p.m. start. Legion's freshman volleyball team will make its debut on Saturday when they play in the Woodmont Tournament.
