The Legion Collegiate Academy girls' basketball team fell behind visiting Porter Ridge High School 16-3 after the first quarter, but battled back to get to within six points at the end of three periods before losing 48-36 on Tuesday night at The Castle.
The loss drops LCA's record to 3-8 on the year while Porter Ridge improves to 13-5.
Freshman guard
Amelia Williams again led the Lancers with 17 points, including 12 in the second half when Legion outscored Porter Ridge 21-19. Williams got the Lancers on the scoreboard in the final seconds of the first quarter when she connected on a 3-pointer from the right corner. The Lancers battled PR on nearly even terms in the second quarter, thanks to five points by sophomore
Jaylen McMurray, and trailed 29-15 at the break.
Williams led a Lancer charge in the third quarter as she scored 10 points to help her team to a 17-9 advantage in the period and cut the Porter Ridge lead to 38-32. The Lancers could not get any closer than six points in the final quarter as PR's Sidney Blackwell made two key baskets to hold off Legion. Blackwell finished with a game-high 26 points as she connected on five 3-pointers.
The Lancers will return to action on Wednesday night when they host Atlantic Collegiate Academy in a basketball triple-header.
