The Legion Collegiate Academy varsity girls volleyball team captured its 30th win of the season and improves to 30-4-3 after defeating Davidson Day 3-1 on Tuesday night. The JV team wasn't as fortunate as it lost 2-1.
The Lancer varsity, who entered the match as the No. 13 ranked team in South Carolina, dropped the first set 16-25 before storming back to win the next three sets by the scores of 25-18, 25-17, and 25-21. The win was Legion's season best 13th in a row.
A foursome of seniors led LCA to the win. Setter
Sophie Larner directed the offense with 39 assists while adding four digs, two kills, and one service ace. Rightside hitter
Bryanna Young led the Lancers with 18 kills and 12 digs while
Addison Burke was close behind with 15 kills and 11 digs. Libero
Anya Pershin added nine digs, and junior middle blocker
Leeya Williams put down eight kills.
The JV team sandwiched one set win between two losses as it fell 20-25, 25-12, 8-15 to see its season record slip to 13-6.
Berlyn Arnold led the team defensively with 10 digs, while Jaida Young, London Winters and Kennedy Fonville each had four kills. Young was credited with eight assists while Channing Cannon had seven assists and a team best three aces.
Legion's next match is set for Thursday, Oct. 10, when it travels to Columbia to face Cardinal Newman. The JVmatch will be at 5 p.m. followed at 6:15 by the varsity.
