Both the Legion Collegiate Academy varsity and junior varsity baseball teams fell victim to Combine Academy National on Monday evening. The varsity Lancers lost 5-2 in a game played at the Winthrop Ballpark while the JV went on the road and fell 10-7.
In the varsity game, Combine took advantage of timely hitting, aggressive base running and a couple of wild pitches to take a 5-0 after four innings.Â
Ryan Burke allowed all five runs as he surrendered six hits and walked two over five and a third innings. He struck out five. Â
Combine scored a single run in the first on an RBI single by Ryan Schwartz and then plated four more runs in the fourth inning with two scoring on wild pitches. Combine put pressure on the Legion defense by stealing nine bases in the game and four of the five runs scored after runners had reached second on steals.
Legion was able to push across two runs in the later innings. Andres Torres collected one RBI as
Riley Stiles,
Griffin McKain and Justin Iannetto each collected one hit for the Lancers off Combine pitching.
The Legion varsity is now 3-2-1 on the season and will travel to Matthews, NC on Thursday to face Carmel Christian Academy.
In the JV game, the Lancers fell behind 10-1 before staging a late comeback in the 10-7 loss. Â
After the Lancers had led 1-0 through three innings, Combine flipped the game on its head by scoring five runs on three hits in the bottom half of the fourth off Legion starting pitcher Bryson Bailey. The home team added five more runs on two hits in the fifth to take the 10-1 lead. Legion bounced back with six runs on two hits in the top of the seventh inning as the Lancers took advantage of Combine's relief pitchers who issued seven walks over the last three innings. Tate Olney led by LCA JVs with two hits in four at bats.
The Legion JV is now 3-2 and will jump back in action on Tuesday afternoon when they travel to Blythewood High School.
