The Legion Collegiate varsity Lancers took on one of the top teams from North Carolina on Monday as they fell to Wayne Country Day out of Goldsboro by the score of 7-2.
Wayne Country Day, ranked fourth in North Carolina according to MaxPreps, remains undefeated as the Chargers improve to 11-0. Legion is now 3-4-1 in the regular season.
WCD took a 4-0 lead in the top of the first inning as they reached Lancer starter
Ryan Burke for two singles, a double and three walks. Burke allowed two runs on wild pitches. The Chargers tacked on three more runs off Burke in the fourth inning as they took advantage of two more walks and an infield error. The visitors kept the pressure on Legion when they had base runners by stealing 10 bases in the game, including four by shortstop Davis Albert who had four. Davis, along with Colin Woodard and Sterling Bass led WCD with two hits each.
The Lancers had their best opportunity to score in the bottom half of the fifth inning when they loaded the bases off winning pitcher Gabe Adams when
Gavin MacDonald and
Griffin McKain singled and Colin Tuttle walked, but Adams was able to escape trouble by striking out Collin Tuttle to end the threat.
Legion got a strong relief performance from
Camden Towell, who allowed just one hit and one walk while striking out four Chargers in three innings.
Next up for the Legion varsity is a road game on Thursday when the Lancers travel to Covenant Day School.
