The Legion Collegiate varsity baseball team cruised to a pair of double-digit victories on Monday in the Cheraw Tournament as the Lancers shutout Trinity Collegiate, 13-0,  in the first game and Lee Academy, 14-1, in the evening contest. Both games were halted after four innings due to the 10-run rule.

Junior first baseman/DH Gavin MacDonald had the hot bat as he crushed two home runs in in the win over Lee and had six runs batted in for the day. The Lancers also got solid pitching performances as freshmen southpaws Connor Salerno and Coalson Williams earned the victories.  Salerno earned the win over Trinity as he surrendered four hits and struck out five in four complete innings. Williams went four innings and allowed just one unearned run and two hits while striking out five Cavs.

Early offense was the name of the game in both contests.  In the opener against Trinity, the Lancers scored eight runs in the first inning with Andres Lopez providing the big hit with a two-run double.  He came back in the second inning to drive home two more runs with another double.  MacDonald also got into the offensive mix with a two-run double in the first inning. Collin Tuttle singled in two runs as well in the first.

A walk to Riley Stiles, the double by Lopez, and a single by Griffin McKain helped Legion extend its lead in the second inning.  The Lancers added their final run in the third inning when Will Bartnikowski drew a bases loaded walk. As a team, the Lancer offense collected 10 hits and drew five walks off two Trinity pitchers.

Against Lee Academy, the Cavs scored their only run in the top of the first, but Williams settled down after that and held Lee in check with no hits over the next three innings.

Legion bounced back to score three runs in the bottom of the first as Justin Iannetto drove in the first run with a single and then scored ahead of MacDonald's first homer of the game to left field.  The Lancers made it 8-1 in the second with five more runs that started when freshman Hudson Riordan hit a solo home run to center field, and Legion took advantage of walks and errors by Lee.

The Lancers closed out their scoring with six more runs in the third, highlighted by MacDonald's second home run of the game to left field.

Legion will face Cheraw on Tuesday at 3:00 p.m. followed by a game against Rock Hill at 6:30 p.m.
