A strong and talented Combine Academy baseball team broke open a pitcher's duel with four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to claim a 7-3 win over Legion Collegiate Academy in Lincolnton, NC on Friday afternoon.
The loss snapped a six-game winning streak by Legion and drops the Lancers to 11-5-2 on the season.
Freshman southpaw
Connor Salerno allowed a first inning unearned run, but Legion bounced back in the top of the third to take a 2-1 lead against Combine righthander Joseph Norris as
Andres Lopez walked, moved to third on a single by
Griffin McKain, and then scored on a wild pitch. McKain scored the go ahead run on a sacrifice fly by Justin Iannetto.
Combine Academy regained the lead at 3-2 with two runs off Salerno in the bottom of the fourth. The Goats collected four singles in the inning.
Iannetto tied the game at 3-3 in the sixth inning as he opened the frame with a walk off Norris, moved to second on a wild pitch, and took third on an infield grounder. He scored the tying run on a wild pitch.
After striking out the first batter he faced in the bottom of the sixth inning, Salerno was relieved by
Coalson Williams. Williams ended up suffering the loss as he gave up a walk and a hit before Jaden Knight delivered a two-run single to give Combine a 5-3 lead.Â
Camden Towell came on to relieve Williams and finished the game, but not before the Goats added two more runs.
Lopez led the Lancers at the plate as he went 2 for 2, which accounted for half of Legion's hits. Â
