The Legion Collegiate Academy Varsity Lancers fell 7-6 in 10 innings to P27 Academy on Monday night at The Winthrop Ballpark despite out-hitting the visitors.
P27 catcher Carson Willis crushed a solo home run to left field in the 10th inning off Legion reliever
Ryan Burke for what proved to be the winning run.Â
Andres Lopez gave the Lancers a chance to tie the game after he singled, stole second and moved to third on a passed ball with two outs, but he was stranded there as Legion saw its record slip to 11-6-1. The Lancers were led by Justin Iannetto and
Griffin McKain as each player collected three hits and Iannetto drove home three runs.
After giving up two runs to P27 in the top of the first inning, the Lancers came back in the bottom half of the second inning to take a 3-2 lead with two of the runs scoring on a double by Iannetto. P27 tied the game at 3-3 in the third, but
Riley Stiles singled in the go ahead run in the bottom half of the inning. The Lancers increased their lead to 6-3 in the fourth inning as they scored twice on an RBI single by Iannetto and a bases loaded walk.
P27 scored two runs in the fifth inning without the benefit of a hit as Lancer starting pitcher
Griffin McKain was his own worst enemy as he issued to walks and made a throwing error on a pick-off attempt at first base. Burke entered the game and was able get Legion out of a jam by recording the final two outs. The game then became a battle of the relievers as neither team could plate a run until Willis' HR in the 10th inning.
