A tragic motor vehicle accident took the life of 29-year-old Jalen Benjamin on Saturday, August 10th around 11:43 am. Benjamin was traveling to a baseball game in Sumter when a tractor-trailer reportedly hit his pickup truck from behind forcing it into another vehicle. Both truck and sedan flipped upside down and Benjamin was pronounced dead at the scene.
The crash remains under investigation by the South Carolina Highway Patrol and Kershaw County Coroner's Office.
"Coach Benjamin was an amazing young coach - his quiet gentle spirit allowed him to connect with his student-athletes in a special way. His bond with his players was always up lifting and positive. We will truly miss his presence, his kind spirit and his big smile!", said
Mike Drummond, Athletic Director at Legion Collegiate Academy.
In addition, The
Jalen Benjamin Memorial Scholarship has also be established.
