Amelia Mason's strong two-inning relief effort helped the Legion Lancer softball team hold off Mountain Island Charter in a 8-7 victory on Thursday in Rock Hill.
Mason was brought on to relieve starting pitcher
Brynley Gaa with no outs in the top of the sixth inning after Mountain Island had tied the game at 7-7. The Lancers had let a 7-0 lead disappear as Mountain Island scored five runs in the fifth frame and tied the game in the sixth. Mason also played a role in Legion's rally to score the eventual winning run in the bottom of the sixth. After El Desermia singled with one out and then stole second, Mason advanced her to third with a base hit to right field and then
Kaylee Belcher drove home the go ahead run with a base hit.
The Lancers collected 14 hits led by Desermia with three of those and two runs scored. Macey Tillman, Belcher,
Gracyn Hagler and Gaa each had two hits. One of Belcher's hits was a triple while Hagler and Tillman had doubles.
Legion is now 2-1-1 on the season and will travel to Charlotte on March 11 to face Myers Park High School.
