Legion Collegiate Academy Recognizes Students, Hands Out Honors on Awards Day

College Choices Announced, Scholarships Awarded, and Outstanding Students Honored

Legion Collegiate Academy recognized 24 Lancer student-athletes who have received college scholarships, presented awards to the Female and Male Athletes of the Year, the Male and Female Scholar-Athletes of the Year,  the recipients of the Mark Cooke Memorial Scholarship, the Anthony "Hutch" Hutchison Memorial Scholarships, the Jalen Benjamin Memorial Scholarship, the Navy ROTC Scholarship, and Minority Scholarship Foundation award, and recognized 84 student-athletes who earned National High School Coaches Association Academic All-American honors during its annual Signing Day and Awards Ceremony held on Thursday, May 15..

A total of 22 Legion Collegiate Academy student-athletes (including 11 on both the first and second teams) achieved recognition this year as Scholar-Athletes.

Members of the Second Team include: Ethan Blocker, Cycling; Kylie Graney, Girls' Flag Football; Ryan Brakstad, Baseball; Emma Dade, Softball; Ian Burke, Boys' Volleyball; Nathan DeSa, Boys' Volleyball; Camille McKinney, Girls' Volleyball; Elizabeth Desermia, Softball; Leeya Williams, Girls' Volleyball; Simone Brown, Gymnastics; Gracyn Hagler, Softball/Girls' Flag Football.
 
The 2024-25 Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year Award was presented to senior Abigail Savage, a member of the Girls' Flag Football and Tennis teams.  She compiled a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 5.4. Senior soccer player Kiernan Graney was the recipient of the Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year for the second consecutive year.  He maintained a GPA of 5.340.
 
The 2024-25 Female Athlete of the Year was presented to Bryanna Young, a senior on the Girls' volleyball team, while the Male Athlete of the Year is Nate Mosiman, a senior on the Boys' soccer team. These two awards are voted on by the coaches and athletic staff.
 
Amelia Mason, a senior softball player, is the recipient of the $1,500 Mark Cooke Memorial Scholarship. Coach Cooke passed away exactly two years ago on May 15, 2023. The scholarship award was presented Coach Cooke's son, Noah, and Lancer Softball Coach Shayna Trist, who also played for Cooke at Winthrop.
 
The $5,000 Anthony "Hutch" Hutchinson Memorial Scholarship was presented to Abigail Savage. Hutchison was on the first Legion Collegiate Academy School Board, and was hired to coach the girls and boys Cross Country teams before he passed away in 2021.
 
The $2,000 Jalen Benjamin Memorial Scholarship has been established in memory of the 29-year-old LCA baseball coach, who was killed in a traffic accident last August. The first recipients are Andres Lopez and Gavin MacDonald.
 
Two other special scholarships were presented this year. Evan Hutson, a senior, was awarded a $200,000 Navy ROTC Scholarship, and senior Hannah Massey received one of two $2,500 Minority Scholarship Foundation Scholarships that are awarded to York County students.
